GERD or gastroesophageal reflux occurs when stomach acid bounces back into the esophagus repeatedly, which can irritate the lining of the esophagus, but how can Gerd be prevented?

Some adjustments to the life regimen can be made to prevent GERD, such as:
Maintaining a healthy weight:
As excess weight puts pressure on the abdomen, which pushes the stomach up and causes acid reflux into the esophagus.
Stop smoking:
This is because smoking reduces the ability of the lower esophageal sphincter to perform its function properly.
Raise the head of the bed:
This is done by placing wooden or cement blocks under the feet of the bed so that the head of the bed is raised by 15 to 23 cm.

Avoid lying down after eating:
It is recommended to wait at least 3 hours after eating before lying down or sleeping.
Eat slowly and chew well before swallowing:
This is done by placing the fork or knife on the table after each bite, then holding it again after chewing and swallowing each bite.
Avoid eating foods and drinks that cause GERD:
Like fatty or fried foods, tomato sauce, alcohol, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, and caffeine.
Avoid wearing tight clothes:
This is because tight clothing increases pressure on the abdomen and lower esophageal sphincter.

Foods rich in fiber
Foods rich in fiber help to feel full, which leads to not overeating, and therefore the likelihood of developing gastroesophageal reflux decreases, examples of foods rich in healthy fiber are:
Whole grains:
- Oatmeal, couscous, brown rice.
- Root vegetables:
- Such as sweet potatoes, carrots, beets.
Green vegetables:
Such as asparagus, broccoli, green beans.
Alkaline foods
Alkaline foods are defined as foods that have a high pH, and these foods may help neutralize stomach acidity, examples include the following:
- Bananas.
- Watermelon.
- Cauliflower.
- Fennel.
- Nuts.nuts.
Water-rich foods
Eating foods rich in water helps to dilute and weaken stomach acid, examples of foods rich in water include:
- Celery.
- Cucumber.
- Lettuce.
- Watermelon.
